Jane paced across Zoey’s bakery kitchen early the next morning. She hadn’t slept a wink. She gave up on sleep at five in the morning and knew Zoey would be up. She’s scared Zoey half to death when she poofed into the bakery.

“I don’t know about having everyone there,” Jane said as she wrung her fingers together. “I don’t like the idea of everyone just staring at me.”

Zoey had been listening to her patiently for the past twenty minutes.

“So, why don’t you tell us who you want there and I’ll do everything I can to make that happen,” Zoey said calmly as she poured flour into a large industrial mixer. Even though Zoey could use her magic to make her treats, she always preferred to do it by hand. It was one of the things Jane really liked about her.

“I don’t think they’d let me,” Jane said with a sigh as she stopped to take a seat on a stool. Chance, Zoey’s black Labrador, sat in front of her and rested his large square head on her knee.

“You won’t know until you ask. What would make you feel more comfortable?” Zoey asked.

“The six of us. Every day I feel more connected to our little group.”

“Okay, do you think you can be comfortable with Lauren and my father there too?”

Jane took a deep breath and then let it out on a sigh. “Your dad has become like a father to me. He’s really taken me in. Grand Mistress Lauren still makes me nervous.”

“Nervous? I make you nervous?”

“Grand Mistress! You have got to stop doing that,” Zoey yelled as the leader of the Claritase just popped into the kitchen. “This is why you make people nervous.”

Jane saw Lauren’s teal eyes dim as her lips curved downward into a frown. “I’m so sorry. I just want to keep an eye on my witches. You’re all like my own little witchlings.”

“Don’t say it,” Zoey groaned. “I know why you are here. Don’t you dare ask me.”

“Ask what?” Lauren blinked her eyes innocently.

“I’m not pregnant, okay?”

“I didn’t ask anything,” Lauren said with a sly smile.

Jane laughed and then looked at Zoey apologetically. If Zoey spoke that freely with the grand mistress, Jane could too. Lauren was just another witch after all. “Grand Mistress,” Jane said before her nerve failed her, “I have a request.”

“Yes, Jane?” Lauren asked as she plucked a hot muffin from the tray and popped a piece into her mouth.

“I’m nervous about this morning. I don’t know what to expect and I don’t want to be embarrassed. I would like to request only the six of us be there. The six from the prophecy.”

Jane waited while the grand mistress ate another bite of the muffin. Her heart beat loudly and her palms were sweaty as she wondered if she were going to get into trouble. It made sense to her now, why she avoided conflict. She’d grown up watching her father berate her mother.

“If you allow Magnus and me to sit quietly in the back of the room, I’ll allow it,” Grand Mistress Lauren finally said.
